High Efficiency Furnaces

Don’t let these high efficiency furnace features intimidate you

Many Seattle area homeowners wait too long before they upgrade their aging or inefficient furnaces simply because the newer terms and descriptions seem so intimidating. Familiarizing yourself with the following descriptions should help you shop for an energy efficient new unit with confidence.

Size. Bigger is not always better when it comes to choosing an HVAC unit. Although it seems obvious that a furnace that’s too small can’t adequately warm your home, one that is too large may cause a disagreeable fluctuation in temperature because it cycles more often. A reputable HVAC contractor will perform an energy evaluation before recommending the size of the unit appropriate for your specific needs.

Ignition System. The days of the continuously burning pilot light are finally over. The new Intermittent Ignition Device (IID), the Hot Surface Ignition (HIS) and the Direct Spark Ignition (DSI) systems operate more efficiently and light the pilot only when the thermostat sends the message that heat is needed.

Dual Heat Exchanger. Simply put, a dual heat exchanger supplements the primary heat exchanger by drawing additional heat from the burning gas.

Zoned Heating. If you have areas within your home that receive differing amounts of sun or shade, or if you live in a large home, zoned heating can greatly increase the energy efficiency of your furnace. Smart thermostats combined with a central controller will allow you to adjust the heat based on your specific requirements.

Variable Speed Blower. A variable-speed blower delivers heat at a slower rate, reducing undesirable temperature fluctuations.

Variable Heat Output. Variable heat output conducts heat at different levels, depending on the current temperature. In cold weather, it conveys heat at the maximum level, but in milder temperatures, it operates at a reduced rate. Combined with a variable speed blower, the energy efficiency of your furnace will noticeably increase.

Once you’ve selected your new furnace, it’s important to schedule routine serviceto maintain maximum efficiency, and to use high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) air filters.
